Tempe High Key Club members recognized for hours of service

Tempe High School Key Club Adviser Katie Phalen took the podium Thursday to thank KCOT for its support and help and to report on the Key Club's success and the robust story, since its reactivation in the 2010-11 school year.  Inactive until she and fellow teacher Lisa Ginn came on board as advisers, the Club now has more than 90 members who are deeply engaged in service and leadership development.  Mike Jennings has served as KCOT's adviser to the Key Club and has been faithful in that role.

Fifteen members of the Tempe High School Key Club , ones that have compiled the most service hours in the first semester as Key Clubbers, attended and were treated for lunch and recognized. They were accompanied by their advisers, Katie Phelan and Lisa Ginn.  The students and their service tally hours are Vinh Truong (22); Oscar Felix (26); Desiree Contreras (20); Emina Grgic (30); Zury Varela (25); Rachel Iserman (24); America Fontes (20); Alexia Yepiz (20); Alexis Parades (27); Nestor Fernandez (26); Victoria Hickcox (26); Xavier Ramirez (22); Melinda Hickcox (30); Alejandro Schugurensky (25); and Nelson Fernandez, Key Club President. The leader in hours, Alexander Randolph (32 service hours) could not attend.

Key Clubbers were involved in two Halloween carnivals, one with KCOT and one at a feeder middle school. The previous Friday night they assisted the City of Tempe in an event at the Tempe Library.  This fall they have raised more than $600 to date in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk to curb suicide. They have been involved in a community garden. They have been invited to help the city in a holiday project.  The goal is to send many Club members to the District Key Club Convention in 2012 in Mesa.  The nearness of that convention will save transportation costs. Kiwanians were invited to help the club  financially through making a donation the Key Club through the Arizona Tax Credit Program (A.R.S. 43-1089.01) which allows individuals to give up to $200 and married couples filing jointing up to $400.  The Nov. 10 Bulletin contained the form or see Mike. Deadline is Dec. 31.
